How to Care for Linen

Linen is one of those fabrics that just gets better with wear. It’s breathable, easy, relaxed and made to be lived in. Yes, it wrinkles. That is part of the charm. With the right care, your linen pieces will soften beautifully and stay in your wardrobe for years. Linen is durable and breathable, but it can shrink, fade or weaken if washed too hot or treated too harshly. Cold washing, gentle detergent, lower heat and breathable storage are the main things that help it last.

1. Always check the care label first

Before anything else, check the label inside your garment. At Diffusion, we highly recommend hand washing your linen garment.

2. Treat stains as soon as you can

Fresh stains are always easier to remove than older ones. Blot gently rather than rubbing, and test any stain treatment on an inside seam first.

3. Wash cool and gently

Linen prefers a gentle wash or hand wash. Use cold or cool water and a mild detergent to help protect the fibres and reduce shrinkage. Linen naturally tightens a little, especially on the first wash, so cooler temperatures are your safest option. Harsh detergents and chlorine bleach are not recommended.

We strongly suggest hand washing linen.
Stronger colours can also transfer, you will find this reduces over time, however you may notice some dyes running on first wash. This is completely normal.

4. Do not overload the machine

Give linen space to move. A crowded wash can cause more creasing and put unnecessary stress on the fabric. Choose a gentle cycle and wash with similar colours.

5. Air dry when you can

The best way to dry linen is naturally. Hang it or lay it flat and let the air do the work. If drying outside, keep it in the shade or turn it inside out to help protect the colour. You can tumble dry on low if needed, but avoid high heat, as that is where extra shrinkage tends to happen. Low heat is the safer choice.

6. Embrace the texture or steam it smooth

Linen is loved for its relaxed finish, so a few creases are all part of the look. If you prefer it neater, use a steamer to soften the wrinkles without being too harsh on the fabric. Steaming is a gentler option than aggressive ironing and works especially well on lighter linen pieces.

7. Store it properly

When the season changes, store linen somewhere cool and dry. Breathable cotton or canvas storage is better than plastic, which can trap moisture and lead to mildew. Good storage helps keep the fabric fresh and ready to wear again next year.

A few simple linen care rules:

Wash it cool.
Use a gentle detergent.
Hand wash where possible.
Do not dry stained pieces with heat.
Air dry when possible.
Steam rather than over-iron.
Store in a breathable space.

The best thing about linen

Linen is not meant to look too perfect. It softens with time, moves beautifully on the body and has that effortless feel we always come back to. Care for it properly, wear it often and let it do what linen does best.
